Cosby lawyers seek to bar alleged victims from sex assault trial

Bill Cosby’s lawyers will ask a Pennsylvania State judge on Tuesday to keep more than a dozen women who have accused the comedian of sexual assault off the witness stand. More than 60 women have accused the 79-year-old entertainer, once beloved by Americans as the father on the 1980s TV hit “The Cosby Show,’’ of sexually assaulting them.

He was alleged to have often done it after plying them with drugs and alcohol, in a series of attacks dating back decades. Only one of those claims resulted in criminal charges, filed against Cosby days before the statute of limitations was to expire.

Andrea Constand, a former basketball coach at Cosby’s alma mater Temple University, said he gave her pills before assaulting her at his Pennsylvania house in 2004. Prosecutors have asked Judge Steven O’Neill of Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania to allow 13 other women who have accused Cosby of sexual assault to testify at the trial. By so doing they said it would go to show that it was a pattern the comedian had adopted over the years. Cosby has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

O’Neill has scheduled two days of hearings on the proposed witnesses and other pre-trial matters. In general, prosecutors are barred from introducing evidence of a defendant’s unrelated prior bad acts for fear it could prejudice the jury. On rare occasions, however, judges will allow it if the evidence shows a clear and longstanding pattern of behaviour.

Prosecutors are also seeking permission to use Cosby’s sworn testimony from a deposition during Constand’s 2005 civil lawsuit, in which Cosby acknowledged providing women with medication and then having consensual sexual encounters with them. Cosby’s lawyers have asked O’Neill to bar that deposition from the trial, arguing that Cosby only agreed to testify; after the then-Montgomery County district attorney assured him no criminal charges would be brought. In addition, his lawyers have mounted yet another attempt to dismiss the case, this time based on the argument that prosecutors waited too long to bring the case. In court papers filed last week, his attorneys said Cosby is legally blind and has memory problems, preventing him from fully participating in preparing his own defense.

Nollywood actor Tunde Alabi’s leg amputated, with no home to go to

The ailing veteran Nollywood actor of Village Headmaster fame, Tunde Alabi, who has been laying critically ill, over complications from diabetes at the Lagos General Hospital has had one of his legs amputated.

The surgery to save the Thespian from further complication by amputating one of his leg took place today, Monday, October 24, 2016. There were several efforts to checkmate the amputation surgery but all failed as they seemed to have come rather too late.

According to the veteran actor’s colleague, Paul Julius, who is the person solely taking care of him, the actor has no home to go back to after the surgery. “ As I speak with you, the amputated leg has just been taken to the mortuary. But that is not our major concern right now but where he will return to as his home. Right now, he has no family, no friend that can take him in. He is homeless,” he said.

“ Our effort to reach the governor of Lagos State, his home tate, has only proven partially successful as nothing definitive has come off it. The governor knows Uncle Tunde and will be willing to help but bottlenecks of bureaucracy has not helped matters” he added.

Tunde Alabi has been on the acting scene since the glorious days of television drama in Nigeria and he’s today one of the last of that octopus called The Village Headmaster, a television drama that was the in-thing in its days on National Television. His role in the now rested soap opera ‘PALACE’ produced by Ralph Nwadike was one that viewers will not forget in haste.

This thorough-breed professional of the old order who is equally at home with the youngsters of today, impacting knowledge and valuable experience into them whenever he has the opportunity is in dire need of help. Paul Julius’ call for help and his assessment of the situation:

Now he’s faced with another battle for survival….. Expensive drugs required to heal the amputated leg……no home to return, no money to afford one as his ailment has suck up his entire finances.

We have done our best… …What would you rather do to assist him….just put something in his account no matter how small and the Lord will reward you abundantly. Thank you” he pleaded.

Signs Aki and Pawpaw are no longer on talking terms

For sometime now, there have been worries and concerns that one of the biggest brands in Nollywood, the Aki and Pawpaw brand, may be running its last course as the brand we used to know. There have been speculations that all is not well between the two diminutive figures who many earlier thought are twin brothers, but who are in fact colleagues destiny and fortune brought together.

According to rumours, problem started between them when one of them, Aki, Chinedu Ikedieze, got married and reportedly asked his performing partner, Osita Iheme, Pawpaw to vacate the flat they shared together for him and his wife. This, according to reports, put a strain on their relationship.

This report got so popular that the duo had to say something on the state of their relationship. What they said calmed the nerves of their fans, but only momentarily. The duo opined that it was only natural that they go their separate ways after one of them got married. “ We cannot live together forever,”Aki offered and Pawpaw too seemed to agree.

Then, all of a sudden, the duo stopped featuring in the same movies as they used to do. Recall that none of them was able to attain any measure of popularity on their own until they bonded and became Aki and Pawpaw.As the fear of their fans was setting to fly again, the duo put their boots to it, saying they hadn’t had a producer in recent times that wanted to feature them together. “ If such script comes our way, you will sure see us together again,” one of them quipped in an interview. How convenient. But the interesting thing is that the duo still perform at shows as Aki and Pawpaw. This is understandable “because no corporate outfit wants to have one without the other”, whispered a source.

Let’s cut out the bullsh**t, all is not well between these two great actors of our time. The reality of it is what Potpourri had to live with at an event in Enugu last weekend. When the duo were to perform, they sure did together, even to the cheers and admiration of their fans, but for someone who has followed them over the years, all the signs were there that there is a crack somewhere even when it is difficult to lay a finger on it.

No doubt, they appeared as Aki and Pawpaw on stage, but they were definitely Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme. They just didn’t connect like Aki and Pawpaw of old. Their act had a bit of life about it, but it just wasn’t breathing. It was like watching a man on life-support, frantically trying to convince the doctor not to pull the plug. They fooled the audience though, not Potpourri.

Okay, stage performances are full of tricks and they could have been misread but what about their relations at their private room backstage? Potpourri was with them at the private room that had at least 15-20 other artistes, big artistes, for nothing less than five hours. It was a private room that was everything but private as everyone was chatting with everyone, drinking, joking, taking selfies and generally, not giving a damn about anything, except smoking. All through the night, Aki and Pawpaw didn’t say a word to each other. Not even a wink, it was so obvious they were trying to avoid each other and this was after they came back from the stage. In fact, while Aki sat at one end of the room, Pawpaw sat at the other end. All the artistes were poking jokes at one another, and having a hell of a time but Aki and Pawpaw were totally aloof from each other. Another curious thing is that, their management people were not even crossing paths.

Recall that in the good old days, they used to share the same management but now they have separate managements. For those who knew them in the old days, they were like Siamese twins, always together, and doing things together. It was almost impossible to see one without the other. But not any more. The next day, I was expecting to see them together at the airport, because we were supposed to catch the same flight to Lagos.

However, only Aki, Chinedu Ikedieze showed up. All the other artistes that were in the same room with us were on the same flight, only Pawpaw was missing. Later, I got to know that he attended Mr Ibu’s birthday in Enugu that day. Isn’t it odd that he would go alone, without his other half? Such is the state of their union now that they can’t even stomach hanging out together – unless for business, no more pleasure.
